Summer Joe

By Wilma Groenen (2002)
On album Eat The Sky (2002)

My name is summer joe
And I live here off the land
And I'll be living off the land
When the winter nights are cold

I just got off my line
Rabbit stew suits me fine
But a good moose for my winter kill
Would take away the winter's chill

When the geese fly and the sky it is so blue and clear
And you can hear them calling for a hundred miles
And when the wind blows and the air is crisp and frosty still
Up on the hill the deer are settling for the night

And that's when I know
I want it back
I never asked for anything
Just to be left alone

And the tb has got my grandson
It'll probably get me too
And the welfare lines grow longer
And these things we never knew
And the oil rigs are noisy
And the roads eat up the ground
And the trucks they come a pounding
And they make a terrible sound
They scared away the deer
And they scared away the geese
And they scared away a way of life
And I just want a little peace

When the geese fly and the sky it is so blue and clear
And you can hear them calling for a hundred miles
And when the wind blows and the air is crisp and frosty still
Up on the hill the deer are settling for the night

Well my name is summer joe
And I live here off the land
And I'll die here on this land
i'll have you know
