The Broken Heart Of God

i>You should know there lies within
A special place in hell for him
The things your daddy put you through
No little girl should have to do

For what it's worth
I bet he's cold
I bet he whines
I bet he sobs
I bet he suffers in the darkness of the broken heart of God
I bet he gets what he's got coming
I bet he's spared no chain or rod
There'll be no rest to find the wicked
In the broken heart of God

I'm not a guy who's got the answers
Of that I can attest
And I'm hung up on troubled issues
Though I've been hung up on less

I've begged and searched the spirit
And I've given it some time
So just bear with me now
Cause writing songs is how I sort things in my mind

You should know I went to school
And then enjoyed the peaceful summers
Just a white kid drunk with pleasures
In the bosom of the suburbs

Spent my time amidst the crowds
Until I learned to play the game
Of picking the things out of my blessings
Of which I could complain

Well I was playing with pornography
You've felt the full effects
Of how depraved a man can get
When all he cares about is sex

When all those spirits crawl inside him
And they tell him it's okay
And then they teach him how to watch
And how to want, and how to take

It makes for awkward conversation, you and I
'Cause I'm not quite sure what to say
We have conflicting views of prayer
Because you tell me "Hell, I prayed"

A little girl, I prayed for movement
But my life panned out the same
I prayed that Jesus come and rescue
But rescue never came

And the only consolation I can give
Is that he'll pay
Is that he'll take a better beating
Worse than one he ever gave
Is that the sins he bathed himself in
Will be coming round again
And he'll eat every heated iron
That he pressed upon your skin
And is that justice?

Well what the hell is justice?
Somewhere between memorized, dismissive slogans and bloodlust
It's like our only realm of spiritual acceptance is pure grace
But at the core of our belief
Is that all things won't end that way

What does it mean
When one life destroys another?
And there's no turn to great repentance
There's no prayer "God save your brother"

There's just birth and then a death
And demons in between
That come to shape the hell on earth
The likes of which I've never seen

I think that justice is injustice
Just played out in reverse
I think that evil comes to find you
When you went to find it first

I think that greed is met with poverty
And violence met with rage
And I think he'll find the crooked key
To every demon that he's caged

I don't like to think you've suffered
But I won't blow off the truth
You're not statistics or a casualty
You're just hardened by abuse

You say if given opportunity
You'd do what was done to you
But to another little girl

And that makes me sad, it makes me angry
Makes me wonder why I came
Makes me think no matter what I do,
Some things will never change

It's like the world is broke to shit
And now it's scattered so abroad
It won't ever be made whole
Even in the broken heart of God

For what it's worth, I bet He knows
For what it's worth, I bet He cares
I bet He saw you in your suffering
When you thought no one was there

I bet He's strong, I bet He's able
To speak in ways words never could
I bet if you so choose, you'll find Him
And taste that He is good

Let's talk about justice

So when I speak there is no substance
In what I have and have not seen
Rather only in the spirit
Do I claim authority

To tell you Christ is well and risen
Been fighting for your soul
Since He was pierced for your transgressions
So that you could be made whole

For what it's worth, I bet He loves you
For what it's worth, I bet He can
I bet He'll piece you back together
In ways you can't understand

I bet He'll tip the scales of favor
And will right all of your wrongs
I bet He'll clean the slew of things
That you can't sing about in songs

I bet His eye is on the sparrow
And He sees us where we are
And He can fix our every ailment
And He can heal our every scar

I bet He knows what lies the enemy
Has told you since your youth
And every lie will turn to nothing
In the light of blazing truth

And I'm not saying that it's easy
But I'm saying you can choose
There's not a thing your dad has done to you
That Christ cannot undo

You know injustice turned you bitter
Untruth has found you fraud
All broken souls are pieced together
In the broken heart of God
