New York is widely known as "The City that Never sleeps" and "The land of Opportunity." However focusing on black urban culture in this area around the 1920's through the 1940's, there is a prevalent ladder of hardships, determination, will to succeed and finally empowerment. These steps were presented through various short stories, songs, poems and novels using artists and authors personal experiences to portray the real life and it's journey for African Americans in New York. The city of Harlem is the main focus primarily because it was the birthplace of African American culture in the North. Geography not only states a physical location but when used throughout texts, songs and stories the vivid imagery ensures a clear understanding of the daily battles and victories black urban culture faced.

Authentic:
Black urban culture is one of a kind and stands out from other urban cultures. Including various beliefs, customs, experiences, and locations to shape their dynamic culture.

Distinct Language:
The way black people communicate is unique to their black urban culture and varies depending on your location. The way black people communication among each other can differ from the way a black individual would address someone of a different ethnicity in a particular area.

Acceptance:
Though many cultures tend to frown upon black urban culture, individuals of this urban culture are accepting among each other. Many black communities have struggled with the approval of others.

Artistic Innovation:
Many genres of music are based in black urban culture; such as rap, jazz, R&B, and blues music. These genres shaped the way for black artists ensuring them a voice to speak on their culture and personal experiences.

Lack of Opportunity:
African Americans were denied the same benefits and experiences
compared to many other races. There was a constant battle with African Americans striving to achieve equality.

Black Power Struggle:
The black urban community aspired to have a better life. African Americans strive to live a life of empowerment and success just as many others did in New York in the 40's.
