Caricatures Then and Now

Have you ever seen a music video that can offend you in a way? Can some words be harmful to your race ? Well people face these problems all the time. In katy's perry new video she makes fun of black people and how they act. No white person gels down there babies hairs and puts an inappropriate word that only black people use. Also she is eating watermelon so if you go back in time you see that white people were making fun of blacks by eating watermelon. What i'm about to say is shocking but past stereotypes still linger with us today.
One of the stereotypes that still are with us today is mammy , she is a women that takes care of the household, while her own kind is suffering. Mammy would mostly have a long dress and works on the plantation with the rest of the house slaves. She was big, black and not so good looking so thats why she stayed in the house. Mammy made people in the south think that this unfair treatment was good for the blacks. Mammy made black women look “happy as slaves”(Pilgrim). Even today the new mammies are servants because they are working for people and mostly the race of the people that are paying them are either whites or high paying people. Even though servants make people look like they are happy they aren't, “there mini- slaves”(Hank). Mammy was a nice way to say that blacks were so kind and that the world should be likes this. BUt as the servants continue there living a bad legacy that is not a good one either. Mammy was only one of a lot of stereotypes that whites used to make fun of blacks, some were lazy and don't do anything but others were working people.
Just imagine a person that sits on the couch all day and does nothing but sit around and be a bad person. This was a coon he was a lazy person and just didn't like to do anything. A coon was very tall and would just be like those men that you see in the park that just sleep but when a lady comes around with some nice assets there quick to jump and ask for the digits. Coon's “ were very miserable and ate watermelon all day”(Ferris). Today we have a new coon there called unemployed workers, they have nothing to do but lay around and wait for their check and stay in their mom's house. So far “ the rate for unemployed workers are 8.5”(Rayes). This is a high number because for all those people talking about that they got money when they don't while spending your mom's check on a new pair of jordan's. Coon's mostly show up in tv shows because theres always that one dumb person of color that can't get anything right. Coon's weren't a good father to children because they left them to the mother and they turned out just like the father.
People always feel the need to call other peoples children a name(ex. oh shes so ungrateful I hope you never turn out like her). This is an example of a pickaninny a child who is dumb and has no home training. They have no mind and can't separate what's right from wrong. Pickaninny “penis would always get cut off because he was dumb enough to pick at the alligator”(authentichistory.org). Today another version of these helpless children are crack babies, they come out all crazy for some crack which is their mother's fault. Children of drug users ‘were lazy and fiends for the crack because of their parents” (Ferris). These caricatures always show up in books because every parent has that special ed child, thats loves to not follow directions. Pickaninnies were wild on the plantation while others just looked out to the one that caused the pain.
Uncle Tom's were people that were crazy about white people , like they were caring for you when they aren't. Tom's were like fiddler in the movie ‘Roots' always looking out for the master and made sure everybody follows his directions. since everything was put on the tom he was the most trusted black on the plantation. Tom's would “work for the whites and leave their family to fend for themselves”(Patty). A present day tom would have to be fast food ladies because they only turn their audience towards white people. The lady for Popeyes talks in that accent to get people to try the food, but really shes degrading herself. The lady would “act all southern and act like she was cooking for whites” (Johnson).
We need to get up and stop the continuation of these stereotypes because they're just becoming out of control. People are starting to take this thing too far so PLEASE FIGHT FOR RIGHTS!
