Tangram

We're doing a project on this in the Data Structures and Algorithm. The game of Tangram is simple. You've got 7 pieces of certain size and shape. Two are idientical, so thus 5 unique ones.

Try the game and see if you can work it out.

The total number of solutions is HUGE and our project is about sorting and storing information about solutions. We don't have to populate the storage but to at least have a principle of deciphering a shape into some sort of code.

Any ideas?

One hot ear

One hot ear Yesterday Sunday I went to one of Dennis Kung Fu camps in St Albans. It was a beautiful day with a chilled breeze.

We practised a two-man-pattern that I've never even seen before and it was great fun.

Just as it was getting dark I was just about the only one left in the field practising my patterns. (A pattern is a combination of movements you perform on your own to remember and learn your kung fu principles.) After a few runs I notice a strange thing. One of my ears got really hot. My forehead was normal and the other ear was really cold as normal. It was just like when you're about to get a fever except it was only the ear.

Strange but interesting since I've never experienced this. And no, there is no simple geometric explanation for it. It's got to be internal; or?

Sand java applet

Yet another useful but impressive java applet. Their website is shit and my browser reminds me I need Japanese language support (which you actually don't need unless you can read Japanese).

I like the Default and the stream

Note that you'll need to have Java support in your browser.

Programmers Block

This amuzing and interesting blog talks about what he calls Programmers Block. It is exactly the same as writers block.

He also touches a solution to the problem.

"I think my biggest problem is that I have big ideas. I constantly get these grand visions for some great new technology or piece of software or service or what ever and my adrenaline really gets pumping. I sit down, sketch it out and then start thinking about how great it's going to be when it's done. Boom, crash, there's the mistake."

"A Swedish tourist who tried to smuggle eight baby snakes, four of which were venomous king cobras, into Australia in his trousers has been jailed for two months."

Some nutter tried to smuggle venomous king cobra. Not in a lunchbox or anything but in his trousers! Amuzing

Kill Bill vol. 1

The Bride

Uma Thurman, Quentin Tarantino and martial arts. How can that fail? It can't!

Johan and I went to see Kill Bill vol. 1 tonight and I am positivly surprised. My expectations were high nomatter how much I tried to surpress them.

Just one little warning: Don't see this film if you have fear of blood; animated, sprayed or poured. There's plenty of it and it took some getting used to.

Just like Natuarl Born Killers there's lots of changes in the format of the film, but not as much. There's one particular moment where Uma has killed some people with her sword in black and white and as she stops for a moment and blinks, the film changes to colour again. Splendid! Other than depicting past time, many films who try to be artistic change back and forth between black and white and colour for no particular reason. In this film it really made sense.

O-Ren Ishii

Enough said! Go and see the film when you can.

Detailed review of P900

Have a look at the very detailed review of the new Sony Ericsson"

The geek within me says I want one. The human within me says I wouldn't use it if I had it.

Actually, the reason I never used my otherwise lovely iPAQ was that it was too big to carry in a jeans pocket. Having the features of a handheld PIM would be nice if it'd fit in my pocket, which sadly the P900 still doesn't. I'll keep waiting.

Systembolaget under pressure

Looks like the Swedish government is being threathened by the European Commission on its restrictions of purchasing alcohol. Systembolaget is what the state-owned company is called that is the only place in Sweden where you can buy strong drinks.

"Stockholm has two months to reply to the Commission otherwise it may be called before the European Court of Justice. "

It's mostly a matter of where taxes are being paid and to whom. Not so much as to selling vodka in foodshops.

Nice date input

Inspired and copied from http://simon.incutio.com/code/js/date-parser/ and http://javascript.internet.com/calendars/fuushikaden-pop-up-calendar.html

This I think is a very neat way of inputting dates on a web form. The server side code must thus be able to parse both 13 december 2003 and 13/12/2003 but that shouldn't be too hard with the DateTime module.

Look at the demo

If you have a browser with which this doesn't work let me know by posting a comment here.

UPDATE this demo had a little bug in the output that I have now fixed.
